2019 NMASFAA Board Elections

PRESIDENT- ELECT

Officer Duties: President Elect- In the absence of the President or in the event of his or her inability or refusal to act, the President-elect shall perform all duties of the President with all attending powers, rights and obligations. 

 

President- The President of the Corporation shall be the principal executive officer of the Corporation and shall in general supervise and control all of the business and affairs of the Corporation. He or she shall preside at all meetings of the members and of the Board of Directors. He or she may sign, with the Secretary or any other proper officer of the Corporation authorized by the Board of Directors, or by these by-laws, or by statue to some other Officer or agent of the Corporation. The President shall conduct all necessary correspondence with the members in regards to meetings with the assistance of the Board of Directors. The President shall be an ex-offico member of all committees formed by the Board of Directors. 

Nominees

Lauren Benally - San Juan College

Lauren Benally works in the Financial Aid Office at San Juan College. Before working at San Juan College, Lauren worked at Utah Valley University in Orem, UT for 6 years as a Financial Aid Advisor and participated in various committees across UVU campus until she returned to her home state of New Mexico.  Lauren continues to get involved in committees and other outreach programs that benefit the students as well as her co-workers.  Lauren graduated from Brigham Young University in April 2010 with a Bachelor’s of Science and is currently pursuing an additional Bachelor’s degree through Utah Valley University.  Lauren enjoys hanging out with her family, making and selling hair bows, shopping at Nordstrom and Target, and eating at Disneyland. 

Susan Chavez- New Mexico Highlands University

Susan is the Director of Financial Aid at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico.  She has enjoyed her many years working in Financial Aid and is most grateful for all the wonderful friends she has gained throughout the years while working at UNM, CNM, and recently NMHU.

Susan has been active in NMASFAA for many years, mostly as a member of the conference planning committee.  This role allowed her to be part of scheduling and preparing the annual spring conferences. She treasures her favorite activity, welcoming the conference attendees and making new friends. 

In 2016 she was named SWASFAA Conference Chair for the conference held in Oklahoma City.  She worked closely with many committees to host a successful event at the Skirvin Hotel in beautiful downtown Oklahoma City.  Susan has been involved with SWASFAA local arrangements planning committees throughout the years when the conferences have been held in Albuquerque. 

In the spring of 2017, Susan organized an event at CNM to host Justin Draeger, President and CEO of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, NASFAA, to speak on changes happening on the Federal level in Higher Education.  This was open to all NMASFAA members, giving them an opportunity to meet and voice concerns.  The event was well attended from Financial Aid offices throughout New Mexico. 

Susan continues to be an active member of College Connect New Mexico where primarily they collaborate with other institutions to assist students and high school counselors with FAFSA completion events and trainings. 

PARLIMENTARIAN

Officer Duties: The parliamentarian shall be well versed in proper parliamentary procedures and shall facilitate the orderly conduct of meetings of the Corporation. Any parliamentary questions or disputes shall be decided by the Parliamentarian

SECRETARY

Officer Duties: Secretary- The Secretary of the Corporation shall be the custodian of the records of the Corporation, shall be responsible for the redcodation and safekeeping of the minutes of all meetings of the Corporation, and shall be responsible for the distribution of the minutes to the members.

Kelsey Higgins- University of New Mexico 

Kelsey Higgins is a native New Mexican and has worked in financial aid for 5 years. She received her BA in Communication and Journalism from the University of New Mexico in 2012. She started working in financial aid shortly after graduating and moving to Arizona. Kelsey was hired at Arizona College in Mesa, Arizona in 2013, where she stayed for about a year. She’s currently a financial aid supervisor at University of New Mexico College of Nursing and has been there for 4 ½ years.

Jennifer Hargrove - San Juan College

Jennifer Hargrove is a Four Corners native and grew up in Southwestern Colorado. She earned an AAS degree from San Juan College in 2012 and a BA in Communication, with a minor in Psychology, from UNM in 2017. Jennifer is currently a Financial Aid Advisor at San Juan College. She has been at San Juan College for five years and has worked in financial aid for a year and a half. Jennifer is passionate about helping students better understand financial aid. Outside of the office she enjoys camping, drawing, gaming, talking about her cats, and spending time with her family.
